peintures de l'artiste Française Gabrielle Thierry
dans l'exposition
"Gabrielle Thierry: The Musicality of the Water Lilies/La Musicalité des Nymphéas"
Le vernissage, en présence de l'artiste, se tiendra le Jeudi 12 septembre 17-19h
Les 8 grandes toiles exposées ont été inspirées par les Nymphéas de Claude Monet
alors que l'artiste les redécouvre au Musée de l'Orangerie de Paris.
Gabrielle Thierry, avec une autorisation spéciale du musée, a pu peindre devant les œuvres de Claude Monet
sur une période de 18 mois de 2010 à 2012.
"En tant qu'artiste peintre, j'entreprends depuis plusieurs années
une recherche sur l'interprétation du paysage à la recherche de sa musicalité.
Je distingue non seulement le paysage tel que je le vois mais aussi ses rythmes et sa musique
que je transforme en partitions colorées.
L'œuvre proposée ici est la représentation de la musicalité des Nymphéas de Claude Monet.
Chacun des 8 panneaux exposés au Musée de l'Orangerie est étudié pour en retranscrire sa musique propre,
traduite en un espace musical et pictural sur la toile." Gabrielle Thierry réalise ses toiles abstraites
en croisant les émotions que lui procurent la peinture et la musique, liées à la Synesthésie.
Pour sa collection permanente, le Collège de Holy Cross a commandé à Gabrielle Thierry une
nouvelle peinture sur une musique du compositeur français Eric Lebrun, musique originale pour piano et violoncelle
- Op.39 - commandée spécialement sur le thème des reflets. Intitulée
"Last Reflection of Ophelia", l'œuvre fait l'objet d'une installation musicale dans l'exposition.
Ce nouvel opus sera interprété par 2 musiciens en résidence : Adam Golka, piano et Jan Muller-Szeraws, violoncelle, lors de concerts organisés à la Cantor Art Gallery.
Un film de Jacques Boumendil retraçant la création de l'œuvre y sera projeté.
Le 9 septembre, une soirée est organisée par l'Office of the Provost, la Cantor Art Gallery et le département Musique et Arts Visuels intitulée :
"Synesthesia : A celebration of Painting & Music" à la Cantor Art Gallery suivi de la présentation de
l'œuvre "Last Reflection of Ophelia" de Gabrielle Thierry et Eric Lebrun au Brooks Concert Hall.
La peinture est dédicacée à Trudie ans Niel Prior

Roger Hankins, directeur de la Cantor Art Gallery, a collaboré avec Brit Smith, director of the Holy Cross
study abroad program, et Maurice Géracht, Stephen J.Prior Professor of Humanities, pour organiser cette exposition.
Géracht et Smith sont les coordinateurs de la Conférence internationale "Words et Images", organisée avec l'Université de Paris-Diderot,
et l'Université de Bourgogne à Dijon. Géracht et Smith sont les co-éditeurs de "Interfaces", revue reconnue et
primée, consacrée aux publications de ces conférences annuelles.
Holy Cross College et la Cantor Art Gallery remercie le Ministère de la Culture et le Consulat de Boston

La Galerie
Fondée en 1983 par Iris & B. Gerald Cantor, la Cantor Art Gallery
est à la fois, un lieu d'expositions publiques contemporaines, et une ressource vitale pour les professeurs et les étudiants de Holy Cross,
reliant les expositions au programme d'études de l'art.
La Cantor Art Gallery a été inaugurée avec l'exposition "Auguste Rodin, 1840-1917", Octobre 1983 présentant 31 bronzes de l'artiste.
Cinq de ces sculptures ont été offertes par la
Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation et font partie dorénavant de la
collection permanente.

Gabrielle Thierry réside à Andrésy, près de Paris.
Avant de se consacrer à la peinture il y a 15 ans, Thierry est Ingénieur en sciences cognitives spécialisée dans la modélisation
de la connaissance. Elle étudie la peinture et le dessin aux Ateliers du Caroussel du Louvres, puis l'histoire de l'art à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
Elle obtient un diplôme de Cambridge (UK) en poursuivant une année chez Christie's Education - Paris.
Cette exposition est la première de l'artite aux Etat-Unis.
The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, Mass.) will present the paintings of French artist Gabrielle Thierry in the exhibition
"Gabrielle Thierry: The Musicality of the Water Lilies/La Musicalité des Nymphéas"
An opening reception, with the artist in attendance, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 12 from 5-7 p.m.
Thierry's series of eight large-scale paintings were inspired by her rediscovery of the "Water Lilies" landscapes
by Claude Monet on view at the the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris.
With special permission from the museum, Thierry painted in front of Monet's originals over a period of 18 months
from 2010 to 2012, where she explored the inner musical qualities of Monet's famous paintings and visually
interpreted them in her own.
Exploring the perceptual phenomenon known as "synesthesia" Thierry experienced the musicality she felt embedded
in Monet's semi-abstract impressionist paintings, which she then transcribed in abstract form, translating paintings
into colored musical scores.
Gabrielle Thierry was born in 1966 and resides outside of Paris in Andrésy, France.
Before devoting her career to painting a little 15 years ago, Thierry was an engineer specializing in cognitive sciences
and knowledge management. She studied at the Atelier du Caroussel - Louvre and École des Beaux Arts in Paris
and obtained a Cambridge, UK graduate degree from Christie's Education.
This will be the first exhibition of her work in the United States.
Roger Hankins, director of the Cantor Art Gallery, collaborated with Brit Smith, director of the Holy Cross
study abroad program, and Maurice Géracht, the Stephen J.Prior Professor of Humanities,
to bring Thierry's work to Holy Cross. Géracht and Smith serve as coordinators for the International Word and
Image Conference, which rotates between Holy Cross; Université Paris Diderot in Paris; and Université de
Bourgogne in Dijon, France. They met Thierry in 2014 as she presented her work on synesthesia at the conference in Dijon.
Géracht and Smith also co-edit the award-winning journal "Interfaces" a scholarly publication which publishes
selected papers presented at the conference.
The College commissioned a painting for its permanent collection by Thierry entitled "Last Reflexion of Ophelia"
which will be displayed in the exhibition, as well as a new musical work sharing the same title and written by
French composer Eric Lebrun in 2017. Op. 39, for cello and piano, will be performed by artists-in-residence
Adam Golka, piano, and Jan Muller-Szeraws, cello, in the Cantor Art Gallery during musical
presentations throughout the exhibition.
A short film relating the creative process of the
music and the painting has been realized by the French director, Jacques Boumendil, will be shown during the exhibition.
A concert is held in conjunction with the exhibition The Musicality of the Water Lilies at the Cantor Art Gallery.
September 9th, "Synesthesia : A celebration of Painting and Music" concert and film projection at
Brooks Concert Hall : dedication of the commissioned works Last Reflection of Ophelia by Gabrielle Thierry and Eric Lebrun in recognition of
Trudie and Neil Prior's significant commitment and support of academic excellence and the arts at Holy Cross, inspiring and transforming
the lives of students, during their time at Holy Cross and beyond.
